Description
The AIP diet (Autoimmune Protocol) is a temporary elimination diet designed to help identify foods that may aggravate symptoms in some people with autoimmune conditions.
It works in three stages:
- Elimination: Usually for several weeks, you remove grains, dairy, eggs, legumes, nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and aubergines), nuts, seeds, coffee, alcohol and highly processed foods.
- Monitor symptoms: You keep track of things such as digestion, pain, skin problems, tiredness and sleep while eating meat, fish, vegetables, fruit and suitable healthy fats.
- Reintroduction: Once symptoms have settled, excluded foods are carefully added back one at a time. If symptoms return, that food may be a personal trigger. Foods that cause no reaction can remain in your diet.
AIP isn鈥檛 proven to cure autoimmune disease or replace medication. Research is promising but limited, and the diet can cause nutritional deficiencies if followed too strictly or for too long. It鈥檚 best undertaken with a registered dietitian鈥攅specially if you have diabetes, bowel disease, gallstones, take medication, are pregnant or have a history of disordered eating.聽
